 Book Reports

You must read an entire chapter book  (60 or more pages) in your Accelerated Reader level each month.  After reading your book, you will summarize the plot (the action of the story), the characters (the people involved), and the setting (where and when the story takes place) in your report. These should be about two pages long.  Each book report must also include the title and author of your book and your name.  You will be required to turn your book report in and take an Accelerated Reading test on it by the due dates below.  Your grade each month will be a combination of these two things:
             1. AR test

                                                          2. Written book report

In addition to each month’s written report, you MAY complete the following projects for extra credit.  I strongly recommend turning in the extra credit.

OCTOBER: Complete “Create a Web” paper (attached).  These will be due by Friday, October 29th.

NOVEMBER:  On the paper provided, illustrate one of your favorite scenes from your book.  On the back of the paper, explain the scene in a few sentences.  These will be due by Tuesday, November 30th.

DECEMBER:  Make a shadow box, using a shoebox, showing some scene or event from your book.  On the back of your box, explain the scene in a few sentences.  These will be due by Friday, December 17th..

JANUARY:  Write a diary entry that one of the story’s main characters might have kept before, during, or after the book’s events.  Remember that the character’s thoughts and feelings are very important in the diary.  These should be two to three paragraphs long.  These will be due by Monday, January 31st.

FEBRUARY:  Write a letter (10-sentence minimum) to the main character of your book asking questions and/or making complaints/suggestions to them.  This must be done in the correct letter format.
                                                -OR-
Write a letter (10-sentence minimum) to me telling about the book and why you liked or disliked it.  This must be done in the correct letter format.

Put your letter in an envelope properly addressed to:

Use your own address for the return address.  These will be due by Monday, February 28th.

March:  Choose a scene from your book that you want to retell.  Create the characters you want to include in this scene.  Be ready to retell the scene to the class using your puppets!!  An informational sheet will come home in early March giving ideas for different types of puppets you can make.  These will be due by Thursday, March 31st.

Please keep this sheet as a monthly reminder of when reports are due.  This can also be found on my website under “Book Reports”.  As always, if you have any questions, please contact me!!
